Old and New, New
By Robert Price
Creating new ways of thinking for the masses is a difficult feat to accomplish even when the goals are recognizable. Yet over the past twenty years a change to the way people communicate through the use of computers is just such an accomplishment. If your age permits you may recall a time before computers became a household name, before mobile phones the size of a brick were more than science fiction. Over the past twenty years demand on the global population to accept new lifestyles derived from advances in technology have been subtly and successfully applied. The clever bit has been to create an environment in which everyone can accept the need to equip themselves with modern lifestyle devices. By completely ignoring the traditional barriers associated with age technology has been able to overcome an inherent reluctance accept change. People from ten upwards use computers and mobile phones today, a fact that only twenty years ago would have met with unadulterated scepticism. Any reference to the globally rapid introduction of computer technology into society would be remiss without reference to a twenty one year old academic from Seattle who in company with others on November 26, 1976 created the company trade name Microsoft. Bill Gates has played a pivotal part in the world-wide acceptance of computers as an everyday part of modern living. Pushing the boundaries has been a fundamental element of the Gates’ ethos, not just his own but also for millions of others. Whether history has reflected the Gates personal vision of a global, computer orientated future will always remain a mystery, suffice to say that Time magazine named him as one of the 100 people who most influenced the 20th century, as well as one of the 100 most influential people of 2004, 2005, and 2006. The next industry likely to attain anything comparable to the global reach achieved by the computer industry is arguably the energy industry. The world-wide search for an energy source to replace fossil fuel will once again change the map as we know it. The impact on our environment will necessitate a massive change in direction similar to that experienced by the introduction of computers to the office and home. There is no doubt the brilliance that is mankind possesses the willpower and ability to develop a fresh energy solution resulting in a generation of new ideas and ambitions that ultimately point us all towards a fresh destination.

The rate at which technology has developed in all fields has been increasing almost exponentially over the last ten years or so. There is no doubt in my mind that people have always been more than willing to embrace advances in thinking and new ways of doing things - especially when the new ways became affordable. What surprises me more than the improvements in technology is the way improvements are foisted upon people because, now, it is just as affordable to put in all the bells and buzzers - even if the end user doesn't want them.
