The Job Rut

By Robert Price

Working at a job that you do not enjoy is a stressful exercise that everyone should avoid. Easier said than done, especially when you have commitments and responsibilities that require your weekly pay packet to meet bills.
Unfortunately commitments and responsibilities do not lessen the stress on an individual working at a job they dislike or simply want to escape. In fact it more probably heightens stress levels that inevitably get brought into the home.
Searching for alternative employment is the most obvious answer, but how do you know that you're not stepping out of the 'frying pan' into the 'fire'? The answer is you don't but if you're that weary of where you're working then you really have little to lose provided the bills are still met. A change can prove to be as good as a rest, at least for a little while anyway. The thing is that once you take that first step and move away from the 'rut' you were living you've actually achieved more than you might realise. You proved to yourself that you're employable. At this point you really need to consider the best work to suit you. The majority of people don't really know the answer to this because most only have a limited knowledge of the number or types of jobs available. Jobs are created at the rate of approximately ten per week so it's not surprising that a majority of the global population don't know what's out there apart from the 'usual suspects'.

The Internet however is gradually creating change with new online businesses identifying a broader job landscape while removing the geographical borders that once were considered insurmountable. Finding a job that actually suits your personality and qualities might actually be easier to find, especially if you broaden your horizons further with a willingness to travel.

Reading this just reminds me how happy and how lucky I am to be retired! I am willing to travel for enjoyment...but not for work!

Hi Janet,

I agree that as we grow older our inclination to find work outside our local area is less inviting. However, in my youth I very much recall how I wanted to discover new environments to work and would have been happy to seek out employment beyond the area in which my parents lived. SYRGRADUATE is intended as a mechanism by which the young who have worked hard for qualifications can now fnd employment and at the same time gain in personal experience.
As a South African who has travelled for many years and finally found the centre of my universe in Ireland. I am happy if my four children follow in my footsteps and are able to gain travel/cultural experience while being employed.

Boy Robert, Don't I know it... That's why I'm starting up my own business.
